It's Only 6:20 A.M

And I have found what has to be the stupidest quote of the week. An act of war? How paranoid is our military? What do they think these guys are going to do, come back from the dead and haunt us until we cry uncle?
Guantanamo suicides 'acts of war' - World - smh.com.au: "'They hung themselves with fabricated nooses made out of clothes and bed sheets,' base commander Navy Rear Adm. Harry Harris told reporters in a conference call from the US base in southeastern Cuba.

'They have no regard for human life,' he said. 'Neither ours nor their own. I believe this was not an act of desperation but an act of asymmetric warfare against us.'

Military officials said the men, whose names were not released, had been held in Guantanamo Bay for about four years. All three detainees had engaged in a hunger strike to protest their indefinite incarceration and had been force-fed before quitting their protest, base commander Navy Rear Admiral Harry Harris said in a conference call from Guantanamo Bay.

One of the detainees was a mid- or high-level al-Qaeda operative, while another had been captured in Afghanistan and participated in a riot at a prison there, Harris said. The third belonged to a splinter group, he added.
Detainees have not been allowed to know about classified evidence of allegations against them and thus are unable to respond.

'They're determined, intelligent, committed elements and they continue to do everything they can ... to become martyrs in the jihad,' said General John Craddock, commander of the Miami-based US Southern ommand, which has jurisdiction over the prison."
Four years and no trial, every moment of their lives monitored, inhumane treatment, pre-adults (formerly known as children) and almost all of them innocent by our own estimation or we would have charged them with something. Maybe they were just tired and saw no way out. America's reputation has taken so many hits lately it is like walking around with two black eyes and so many bruises that we look like the spouse of a wifebeater.

How much longer before we say enough is enough and demand that our country adhere to some type of human decency? How much longer before we wake up and realize that it is just a short step before Americans start to disappear into this legal limbo? How much longer before we realize that we aren't accomplishing anything by this behavior and need to rethink our strategy before we are alone against the rest of the world? How much longer will we keep sending our overstressed troops into a battle that is going nowhere? How much longer will we keep our heads in the sand, hoping that all the bad problems will go away and we can continue on with our lives?

How much longer before we realize that it's a fantasy on its way to becoming a nightmare?
